As many of you know, Nintendo streamed a new Nintendo Direct earlier this month on April 12th. This direct conveyed an abundant amount of information in just 35 minutes. Quite a few surprises in there as well.
First, I’ll start with the 3DS info. I’ll simply name the games that I am most excited for because the list is huge. My most anticipated games from the list of 3DS games that they showed us are Pikmin 3DS (there has never been a mobile pikmin game before so that’ll be exciting!), Monster Hunter Stories (A game that allows you to capture and train monsters in order to battle others in turn based combat), an update to Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valencia (Very excited for the new Fire Emblem game!), And lastly we have the new Kirby game, Kirby’s Blowout Blast.
Now I’ll move onto the Switch information. This is the information I was most excited about from the Nintendo Direct. One of my most anticipated games for the Switch was Arms, and they left a hefty amount of details for that game in this direct. For one, they announced a new character Min Min, a girl who has noodles for arms (I love her). Not only did they introduce a new character, but also mentioned new abilities that can be used throughout every Arms match. Every character has their own unique ability they can use in a fighting match. They also announced a 2 v 2 battle mode, which before was unheard of! Lastly, they finally announced a release date, June 16th! Sooner than I expected for sure.
The other game that they showed off that I’m sure many of us were excited about is Splatoon 2. With this demonstration, they showed off a new game mode called Salmon Run, which looks like a multiplayer co-op horde mode. This mode looks really addicting and I can’t wait to see what they add the new mode.

Before I begin, let me explain that I thoroughly enjoyed the Pokemon Sun and Moon series. It was ingenious of Nintendo to mix up the Pokemon formula quite drastically. It kept the series feeling fresh, even with its 7th generation. However, one feature I am still bummed about that they scrapped, was mega evolutions. I’m sure they had their reasons, primarily the fact that Z-moves were being introduced, but it would have been very cool if they could somehow include mega evolutions into it all. I’m not sure if this is a popular opinion, but I believe that mega evolutions have much more potential for creativity and strategy than Z-moves. Z-moves just seem like an overpowered cool move that you can use on your opponent at any given time. I know that there is strategy implemented with them, like when you should use which specific Z-move on your team against a specific opponent, but in my eyes, it is rather underwhelming. It is a singular move. With mega evolutions, some Pokemon that were previously considered unusable, became competitively viable! It also gave them a brand new transformation, and sometimes your type would change depending on the mega evolution. I thought mega evolutions were a fun mechanic, and I’ll always be a little bummed that Pokemon Sun and Moon will never offer new mega evolutions. Hopefully in future iterations of the games they’ll see a return.

Reason number three for why Kirby games are so enjoyable, at least in my opinion, would be the fact that there is a wide variety of moves for each special power of Kirby’s. This reasoning does not go for all traditional Kirby games, but a large majority of them allow Kirby to use more than one move with any special ability. It is this wide variety that I adore with Kirby games. It just adds a whole new aspect to how you can play the game. There is a lot of discovering what moves work best around which enemies, and creates a lot of replayability.
And last but not least, we have my final reason for why Kirby games are so dang enjoyable. Now this reason might be due to the fact that I have an extremely short attention span, but it is a strong reason nonetheless in my eyes. Kirby games are EXTREMELY fast paced! There is no tutorial, you just drop in and go. Not only do they just drop you in, but the Kirby levels are usually pretty short. This is in order to keep the experience from getting stale with long drawn out levels. I absolutely adore the fast pace of Kirby games. I am always constantly entertained with these games and they always leave a smile on my face. The OST also enhances this fast pace and upbeat gameplay. Kirby OSTs are always filled with very energetic and catchy tunes that you can’t NOT hum to. These are the kind of songs that will haunt your dreams at night due to the catchiness so watch out. The OST further amplifies that sense of quick pace though because it just adds to the energy released throughout the game.

Kirby has been a beloved series among many Nintendo fans for years and years. But what makes this game series so enjoyable? It seems to have a very simple formula, i.e. sucking up enemies to take their powers, but people can’t seem to get enough Kirby. This is because it is a consistent formula that WORKS well and can be mixed up in a variety of ways that keeps players interested while also enjoying the things that made them love Kirby games in the first place.
Firstly, one reason that Kirby games are so lovable, is the fact that Kirby games always make sure to have more than just the core gameplay. There always is some form of collectables, mini games, and more. As a kid, this is HUGE. It gives off a sense of satisfaction for the amount of content that is provided. Essentially, you’ll never be bored. Kirby games are good at keeping things fresh.
Another reason, would obviously be Kirby’s gimmick in every game, the ability to steal your enemy’s powers, and use them as your own. This power is so cool, because you get to choose what ability you want. And not only do you steal their abilities, but their outfit as well. If you absorb the ice mage’s ability, not only will you have an ice wand, you will also wear an ice crown on your head, and change to the color blue. As a kid, I thought this was an amazing feature, and I just wanted to witness Kirby’s outfit with every special power.

Reason number three for why Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite Mario game: The tropical theme. This reason isn’t a very logical one as it is just an opinion. I am a huge sucker for tropical themed games, and this is no exception. There’s just something about the vivid blue oceans, the beaming sun, and gorgeous colors of the coral reef that makes the game that much more enjoyable for me. This aesthetic is ideal in my opinion. Maybe it’s because I used to live in California growing up, or maybe it’s because I’ve always wanted to live by the beach, but this is a big reason why I gush over Super Mario Sunshine all the time.
And finally, my last reason as to why Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario game is the game’s gimmick. Throughout every Mario game there is one huge gimmick that controls how you interact with each level. In Super Mario Galaxy, you had the ability to gravitate around small planets, in Super Mario 3D land, you could transform into a raccoon suit and glide across long gaps, and in Super Mario World you could obtain a cape that allows you to soar to the skies. In Super Mario Sunshine, however, we have my favorite Mario gimmick of all time: A water jetpack (F.L.U.D.D). There are so many creative ways to use F.L.U.D.D, from spraying underneath you to soar into the air briefly, to spraying some water in front of you so you can glide across the ground. There are multiple functions to the mechanism, and I loved discovering new ways to use it. One thing that I love about it, is the management that occurs with this mechanism. You must keep track of how much water you are spraying because you only get a specific amount. F.L.U.D.D must be refilled regularly. Another cool thing about it is the fact that as you progress through the game, you unlock upgrades that further enhance your capabilities with the jetpack. Some of these allow you to fly faster, others may enhance your range. Either way, it opens up new doors to where you can travel in the game, and how you go about doing so.

In preparation for the new 3D Mario game named “Super Mario Odyssey”, I would like to talk about my favorite 3D Mario game of all time, Super Mario Sunshine. I’m not sure if it’s the nostalgia, or the beautiful visuals, but Super Mario Sunshine has always been a cherished game of mine. I’ve had so many fond memories of Super Mario Sunshine, whether they include me admiring its beauty or ripping my hair out. Either way, these memories are quite memorable.
So, why IS Super Mario Sunshine my favorite Mario game? Well for one, this game has a very open world like feel. What I mean by that is, you can choose what levels you want to play from whichever world whenever you want given you have the materials to access the world. I absolutely adore this feature, especially given that most Mario games do not include this due to the series’ popular formula of linearity. The open world feature really gives the player enough freedom to do as they please. If you are stuck on a level you can simply hop to another world, and believe me you will get stuck. I consider this Mario game to be one of the hardest in the series and this is the second reason it is my favorite Mario game of all time.
As I mentioned above, the second reason that Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario game of all time, is the fact that it is quite challenging. If you’ve asked any fan of the game, they would agree with me. This game is exceedingly hard, especially for 10-year-old me! There have been times that I wanted to throw my disk out the window or snap it like a twig. It can be so infuriating! Some of these levels are just so frustratingly hard that they require you to adapt to the controls like no other Mario game. Now some people may think that this is a bad thing, but for me, it had a positive influence. It left me wanting more. I wanted to prove to the game and myself that I could beat these hard levels. I was committed. This addicting factor made the game that much more enjoyable. And of course, not all levels were like this. In fact, a large majority of the levels were of normal difficulty. Of the few that were hard though, they were VERY difficult.

How would you feel being isolated with horrific monsters in a scary environment? Well, the survival horror game Dead Space makes it happen. From the moment, you start the game your heart accelerates and it gives you no time to prepare for the mission.
The game was first released in October 2008 for all major game platforms (Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, and PlayStation 3). The story takes place in the future where the main protagonist Isaac Clarke is an engineer who is in control of an interstellar mining ship. The place is overrun by strange aliens that murder the entire crew in the starship. The crew corpses were mutated to ‘Necromorphs’ a horrific new creature combine with an alien infection. Shortly after the alien attack, the ship system is corrupted and it’s up to Isaac Clarke to fix the ship and find survivors. The fun begins when Isaac is determined to escape the ship by exploring the halls and rooms. It can take up to 14 hours to escape the ship. The game has many jumpy surprises in the most unexpected ways they find easy techniques to scare the player. Dead Space tops the horror genre to another level bringing the action, intensity and extreme violent to the game. If you like survival horror and action games this is the perfect dead match to play in the dark.
The game success fulfilled the need of the players by creating sequels, Dead Space: Extraction, Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3. Recently the game lower the price for PC lovers on the windows operating systems for only $9.69.
